Moroccan National Squad Climbs to 9th Place in Futsal World Ranking

Morocco’s futsal team beat Argentina 7-0 in a friendly match on Thursday evening at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Salé.

Otmane Boumezou opened the scoring for the Atlas Lions before Anas El Ayyane extended the lead. Ismail Amazal, Soufiane El Mesrar and Idriss Raiss El Fenni then scored the national team’s third, fourth and fifth goals. The Moroccans’ sixth goal came from Sofiane Charraoui, followed by a seventh from goalkeeper Abdelkrim Anbia.

The two teams will meet again next Saturday for a second friendly game, also to be held at the Mohammed VI Football Complex (7:00 p.m.).

Morocco’s Hicham Dguig, head coach of the futsal team, announced the final roster of fourteen players selected for the upcoming Futsal World Cup. The tournament is scheduled to take place from September 14 to October 6 in Uzbekistan.

Morocco’s Fouzi Lekjaa, President of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF), welcomed, on Wednesday, the national futsal team delegation at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Salé. This meeting was held in anticipation of the team’s participation in the Uzbekistan 2024 World Cup.

During the gathering, Lekjaa extended his congratulations to the Atlas Lions for their impressive achievement of winning the Africa Cup of Nations for the third consecutive time. This triumph has secured their place in the upcoming World Cup, scheduled to take place from September 14 to October 6, as highlighted in the FRMF’s official statement.

Lekjaa used the occasion to encourage the team to represent Moroccan football with honor on the world stage. He also discussed the final stages of preparation for this fourth World Cup appearance, following their previous participations in Thailand 2012, Colombia 2016, and Lithuania 2020.

The FRMF president underscored that the federation has committed extensive resources to ensure the success of the team, which has become a model of excellence. He emphasized the historical significance of reaching the World Cup finals, noting that such an experience is best understood by those who have lived it.

With Morocco currently ranked 6th in the FIFA standings, Lekjaa stressed the importance of achieving positive results in this tournament. The Moroccan team, which will depart for Uzbekistan this Sunday, has been drawn into Group E, where they will face Portugal, Panama, and Tajikistan.

The Moroccan national futsal team has been named the best worldwide in 2023 by Futsalplanet.com, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) announced on Sunday 04 August.

This title comes in the wake of the team’s impressive achievements over recent years, including winning three CAF Africa Cup of Nations titles, three Arab Cups, and reaching the quarter-finals of the FIFA Futsal World Cup in Lithuania, FRMF said on its website.

The squad is gearing up for the forthcoming World Cup, which will be held in Uzbekistan from September 14 to October 6, 2024.

Morocco is housed in Group E, alongside Portugal, Panama and Tajikistan.

Morocco will play in Group E in the FIFA Futsal World Cup (Uzbekistan-2024), following the draw ceremony held Sunday in the Uzbek city of Samarkand.

   Morocco will play in this group alongside defending champions Portugal, Panama and Tajikistan.

   The Uzbekistan-2024 Futsal World Cup will be held from September 14 to October 6 in the cities of Tashkent, Andijan and Bukhara.

   In addition to Morocco, three-time defending champion of the African Cup of Nations, the African continent is also represented by Angola and Libya.

The Moroccan national team won the Futsal African Cup of Nations (AFCON 2024), for the third time in a row, after besting Angola 5-1 in the final played Sunday at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Hall in Rabat.

   Soufiane Bourite (6th), Idriss Rais El Fenni (16th), Soufiane El Mesrar (17th), Anas El Ayyane (31st) and Bilal Bakkali (35th) scored for the Atlas Lions, while Adérito (7th) scored the only goal for the Angolans.

   Earlier in the day, Libya beat Egypt 3-1 on penalties (regular time: 2-2) to secure the third spot.

   The top three teams in this African contest book their tickets at the Futsal World Cup, which will be held in Uzbekistan from September 14 to October 6.
